SHAHNAZ BOKHARI

In her interview she said: “The first case of critical violence in which I became involved was that of a woman named Zainab. Her husband- who was a religious priest and preached in the mosque 5 times a day- inserted a metal rod into her private parts and passed an electrical current through it. The current left her almost dead”(Bokhari 31). Bokhari and her organization got Zainab’s husband convicted for 31 years but the highest court in Pakistan decided he only needed to serve 10 years and then one of the past presidents got him released a year early. (Bokhari 31). A rapist ended up only serving nine years in prison despite committing a heinous act. Zainab’s story further proves that the justice system in Pakistan is biased and unfair. It is completely unacceptable for disturbing acts such as these to receive minimal punishment if any at all. However, it is stories like these that show how important Bokhari’s work is.
